Darʾ Taʿâroud al-ʿAql wa-n-NaqlIbn Taimiya

In Muslim’s collection:

“Allah has a veil of light. Were He to remove it, the splendour of His Face would burn everything within the reach of His sight.”

He said:

In some narrations of the hadith: “Seventy veils of light.”

It should therefore be understood that this comparison is particularly fitting for the Creator, glorified be He: light is perceptible to the senses, yet neither sight nor understanding can grasp it, even though it is not a body. For the general public, only what is perceptible to the senses exists; what is imperceptible is, to them, nonexistent.

Since light is the noblest of perceptible things, it must be used to represent to them the noblest of existing beings.
