Corruption, however, is the opposite of soundness, as Allah Most High says:
“When it is said to them, ‘Do not cause corruption on the earth,’ they say, ‘We are only reformers.’” [al-Baqarah: 11]
Allah Most High also says:
“Moses said to his brother Aaron, ‘Take my place among my people, set things right, and do not follow the way of those who cause corruption.’” [al-Aʿrāf: 142]
He says:
“Do not cause corruption on the earth after it has been set right.” [al-Aʿrāf: 56]
He says:
“When he turns away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption in it and destroy crops and livestock. Allah does not love corruption.” [al-Baqarah 205]
He says:
“For that reason, We decreed for the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul—unless in retribution for murder or for corruption in the land—it is as though he had killed all mankind.” [al-Māʾidah: 32]
The angels said:
“Will You place in it someone who will cause corruption in it and shed blood?” [al-Baqarah: 30]
Allah Most High says:
“The only recompense for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive to spread corruption in the land” [al-Māʾidah: 33]
He says:
“Had the truth followed their desires, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined. Rather, We have brought them their reminder, but they turn away from their reminder.” [al-Muʾminūn 71]
Soundness for human beings consists, in sum, in obedience to Allah and His Messenger: doing what benefits them and refraining from what harms them. Corruption is the reverse.
A thing’s soundness consists in attaining the perfection through which it achieves its happiness. Its corruption is the reverse.
