Darʾ Taʿâroud al-ʿAql wa-n-NaqlIbn Taimiya

If it is objected:

“Al-Āmidī and others have raised a well-known objection here, stating that it admits of no answer. It is conceivable that each possesses power, provided the other does not act alongside him. This does not detract from that power, just as one has the power to bring about one of two opposites, provided the other is absent.

“For two opposites to coexist is impossible. Thus, the power to bring about one precludes the power to bring about the other simultaneously, but does not preclude the power to bring about the other in its absence. Rather, each opposite lies within one’s power provided the other is absent: they are within one’s power alternatively, not jointly. The same may therefore be said of two beings possessing power: each has power over a particular act when the other lacks power over it.”

The reply is:

This analogy is invalid. One who has power over two opposites brings about either by his will. When he brings about one, he is not incapable of bringing about the other; rather, he has the power to do so if he chooses it. Bringing them about together is intrinsically impossible and is not a thing at all.

This does not detract from his power in any respect. For someone who brings about one of two opposites chooses this rather than that. The other is absent only because he did not will it, not because someone else prevented him from bringing it about, nor because he lacks the power to bring it about should he will to do so.

The case is different when it is said of someone possessing power that he can act only if another enables him and does not will to act alongside him; and that, were the other to will to perform the same act, he himself would be unable to perform it. In that case, he would not possess power independently. Rather, he would remain powerless until the other enabled him and refrained from performing the act he performs.

What further clarifies this is that the Creator must possess power, and must possess it independently—not through power acquired from another—and it is impossible for there to be another alongside Him who possesses power
