such things inevitably occur, yet you neither declare Him free of them nor deny them of Him, although He is more deserving than you of being declared free of objectionable imperfections?
Likewise, He says concerning His oneness:
“He presents you with an example from yourselves: do you have, among those whom your right hands possess, partners in what We have provided for you, so that you share equally in it, fearing them as you fear one another?”
[Al-Rūm: 28]
That is, as some of you fear others, as in His words:
“Yet here you are, killing one another.”
[Al-Baqarah: 85]
And His words:
“Why, when you heard it, did the believing men and women not think well of one another?”
[Al-Nūr: 12]
And His words:
“Do not defame one another.”
[Al-Hujurāt: 11]
And His words:
“So repent to your Creator and kill one another.”
[Al-Baqarah: 54]
And His words:
“Nor expel one another from your homes,”
through to His words:
“Yet here you are, killing one another.”
[Al-Baqarah: 84–85]
The intended meaning is the same in all these passages.
Thus He, glorified be He, made clear that a created being does not make his slave a partner in his wealth such that he fears his slave as he fears an equal. Rather, you refuse to allow your slave to be your equal. How, then, can you be content to make what I have created and own a partner with Me, invoked and worshipped as I am?
As they used to say in their pilgrimage invocation:
“Here I am at Your service, O Allah, here I am. Here I am; You have no partner, except a partner who belongs to You: You own him and whatever he owns.”
