Darʾ Taʿâroud al-ʿAql wa-n-NaqlIbn Taimiya

We shall show, Allah willing, that even if the denial of attributes and acts subsisting in Allah is conceded, his position is far more untenable and contradictory than that of those who affirm temporal origination. If their position contains anything that contradicts clear reason, the position of his followers contains still greater contradictions of clear reason.

For if the essence is simple, with no act whatsoever subsisting in it, then, indeed, the perpetual proceeding from it of diverse and temporally originated things, with or without an intermediary, is even more impossible than their proceeding from it after not having done so. For if something temporally originated can arise from it without any newly arising cause on its part, then temporally originated things can arise from it after not having arisen. If that is impossible, then the perpetual arising from it of diverse, temporally originated things, with or without an intermediary and without any act on its part, is even more impossible than diverse things proceeding from it after not having done so.

This is why Aristotle, the leading figure among them, did not mention an efficient cause for the origination of motion. He merely stated that the cause of temporally originated things is celestial motion and what results from it, and mentioned a final cause for this.

He stated that everything that moves must have a mover that moves it. He held that the First moves the celestial sphere as a leader who is followed and emulated moves the follower who follows and emulates him. This may also be likened to the way a beloved moves his lover.

It is well known that causing motion in this way involves neither an act nor an intention on the mover’s part. Yet that motion comes into being after not having existed. We therefore ask about the agent that brings those contingent bodies into existence: even if something contingent is eternal, it must have an agent. What, then, is their agent? We also ask about the efficient cause of those temporally originated things. For the moving entity is contingent; so if its mover consists of things arising within it, as they maintain concerning the celestial soul’s conceptions and yearning, they may be asked:

“What, then, brings those conceptions and volitions into existence, one after
