Darʾ Taʿâroud al-ʿAql wa-n-NaqlIbn Taimiya

He said:

“One may object that this reasoning applies only to a cause whose effect follows necessarily from its very essence, not to an agent acting by choice. For it may be said that, from eternity, He willed to bring the world into existence at one time rather than another. If they ask, ‘Why, then, did He will to bring it into existence at that time rather than before or after it?’ the discussion would be lengthy. It is set out exhaustively in our other works.”

[Ibn Taymiyyah’s Commentary]

I say: The answer he has given is that of many speculative theologians among the Muʿtazilah, Karrāmiyyah, and Ashʿariyyah, as well as those jurists who agree with them among the followers of the four imams and others.

The objection to this answer is well known: it entails giving precedence to one possibility without a determining factor. What was stated under the first alternative amounts to complete causal efficacy obtaining from eternity while the effect is delayed. Its implication is that something fails to follow from the complete cause that necessitates it, as has been explained at length elsewhere.

[Responses to This Argument: The First Response]

There are several responses to this argument.

The First Response

His statement, “This entails an infinite regress, which is impossible,” is incorrect. An infinite regress is possible according to those who accept the conclusion of this argument, since this is a regress of effects, not of causes. Indeed, its conclusion cannot consistently be accepted without allowing such a regress. Thus, their statement, “An infinite regress is impossible,” is false on their own principles.

This is a point that confuses many people. A regress of effects sometimes means a regress involving individual effects: for example, His producing one thing after another, then another after that, such that He produces one only after another, and that one only after yet another, and so on.

Such a regress is possible according to the philosophers and the leading authorities of the religious communities—the people of the Sunnah and hadith.
