Darʾ Taʿâroud al-ʿAql wa-n-NaqlIbn Taimiya

It may be said:

“Whatever depends on nothing other than a given thing must exist once that thing exists,” down to his words, “Whatever proceeds from the Light of Lights does not depend on anything else,” and so on.

What do you mean when you say, “Whatever proceeds from the Light of Lights”—meaning Allah—“does not depend on anything else”? Do you mean that it does not depend on anything separate from Allah? Or do you mean that it does not depend on an act subsisting in the Lord Himself, which He performs by His will and power?

The first meaning does not help you. Its not depending on anything separate from Allah does not entail that it does not depend on His act performed by His will and power. Consequently, its eternity does not follow. Rather, if the act subject to His will and power is temporally originated, then whatever depends upon it has even greater reason to be temporally originated, since it cannot exist before that act. Whatever does not precede temporally originated things must itself be temporally originated.

If you say that it does not depend on the Lord’s act subsisting in Himself, this is precisely the point at issue. You have offered no proof that the existence of contingent things does not depend on the Lord’s act subsisting in Himself. Rather, proof requires that intelligible things depend on the agent’s act, and that the effect depend on the cause’s necessitating it. The cause is one thing, and its necessitating the effect is another.

If the cause is conditional upon something that subsists in it through will and power, what is conditional cannot come about before its condition. You have offered no proof establishing an abstract cause devoid of any condition. Rather, proof rules this out, since the eternity of this cause would entail the eternity of its effect, and of its effect’s effect. For nothing caused by a complete cause can come into existence later than that cause. Consequently, temporally originated things would have no agent whatsoever. This is among the most manifest errors, known to be false by necessity.
