He said:
“Attention to this pillar is imperative, for establishing the existence of accidents through it undermines the entire system of the atheists’ doctrines. Their fundamental claim is that the world has always been as it is: one revolution of the celestial sphere has always preceded another, without any beginning. Likewise, events in the realm of generation and corruption have always succeeded one another without any starting point. Every offspring is preceded by a parent, every crop by seed, and every egg by a hen.
“We say: Your principle necessarily entails the successive existence of events infinite in number and without limit in their individual instances. The invalidity of this is known from the first principles of reason. Let us consider the revolution in which we now find ourselves. According to the atheists’ principle, an infinite number of revolutions have elapsed before this present revolution. Yet what has no end cannot be exhausted one instance after another. Since the revolutions preceding this one have elapsed, their having elapsed indicates that they are finite. This much suffices for our purpose.”
Ibn Taymiyyah’s commentary
I say:
This is the argument that, as noted earlier, has been challenged by many speculative thinkers
