by knowing that something comparable exists, and sometimes by knowing that something exists when the thing in question has an even stronger claim to existence. For the existence of something demonstrates that what is less than it is even more readily possible. Once something has been shown to be possible, the Lord’s power to bring it about must also be demonstrated. Merely knowing that it is possible is not enough to establish that it can occur unless the Lord’s power to bring it about is known.
[Evidence for Resurrection in the Book of Allah]
He, glorified is He, has explained all this in statements such as:
“Have they not seen that Allah, who created the heavens and the earth, is able to create their like? He has appointed for them a term about which there is no doubt, yet the wrongdoers refuse anything but disbelief.”
al-Isrā’: [99]
And His saying:
“Is He who created the heavens and the earth not able to create their like? Yes indeed! He is the All-Creating, the All-Knowing.”
Yā Sīn: [81]
And His saying:
“Have they not seen that Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and was not wearied by creating them, is able to give life to the dead? Yes indeed! He has power over all things.”
al-Ahqāf: [33]
And His saying:
“The creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind.”
Ghāfir: [57]
For it is self-evident to reason that creating the heavens and the earth is greater than creating beings like the children of Adam, and that the power to do so is more far-reaching. This easier act is therefore all the more possible and within His power.
Likewise, He demonstrates this by referring to the first creation, in statements such as:
“It is He who originates creation and then repeats it, and that is easier for Him.”
al-Rūm: [27]
For this reason, He then says:
