Allah unless one’s belief about Him is grounded in evidence. If understanding that evidence were beyond a layperson’s capacity, this would mean burdening him with what he cannot bear, contrary to what Allah has explicitly stated.
Another proof:
When we examine the proofs of Allah’s oneness and the matters in which a layperson must abandon uncritical imitation, we find them easy to grasp and readily accessible; souls yearn for them because of the affinity they feel for them.
This rests on two considerations:
First, this knowledge depends on reason. Indeed, this is why our opponents have claimed that reason itself makes such knowledge obligatory; and ordinary people possess reason.
This is evident both from revealed law and from rational observation. Revealed law imposes obligations only upon those who possess reason. Their property is handed over to them because of their sound judgment, and no one can possess sound judgment without reason.
As for rational observation, their reason is evident in their management of affairs, their ingenious stratagems, and their subtle cunning in the various concerns of worldly life. People have written books on this, compiling forms of cunning and stratagems, and carefully devised plans for managing affairs, that provide ample evidence for anyone who considers them.
Second, the proofs of this knowledge are manifest, possessing the utmost clarity and transparency, so that souls find reassurance in them. An example of this is the reasoning by which
