Several Companions, including Jundub ibn ʿAbd Allāh and ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, said:
“We learned faith, then we learned the Quran, and our faith increased.”
Allah Most High says:
“And thus We have revealed to you an inspiration by Our command. You did not know what the Book was, nor faith, but We made it a light by which We guide whom We will of Our servants. And indeed, you guide to a straight path * The path of Allah, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Indeed, to Allah all matters return.”
As for those who uphold innovations contrary to the Book and the Sunnah, they are in a state of either simple ignorance or compound ignorance, like the disbelievers. The former are:
“Like darkness in a deep sea, covered by waves, above which are waves, above which are clouds—layers of darkness, one above another. When one holds out his hand, he can hardly see it. Whoever Allah does not grant light has no light.”
The latter are:
“Like a mirage on a plain, which a thirsty person thinks is water, until, when he reaches it, he finds nothing there, but finds Allah there, who pays him his account in full. And Allah is swift in reckoning.”
Those characterized by simple ignorance and disbelief neither know the truth nor support it. Those characterized by compound ignorance and disbelief believe that they have understood and attained knowledge, yet what they possess is not knowledge but ignorance.
