Darʾ Taʿâroud al-ʿAql wa-n-NaqlIbn Taimiya

which He conveyed to Mary.” The word which He conveyed to Mary was His saying to him, “Be!” Thus Jesus, peace and blessings be upon him, came into being through “Be!” Jesus is not himself “Be!”; rather, he came into being through “Be!” “Be!” is an utterance from Allah, and “Be!” is not created.

The Christians and the Jahmiyyah spoke falsely about Allah concerning Jesus. The Jahmiyyah said, “Jesus is the spirit of Allah and His word, but His word is created.” The Christians said, “Jesus is the spirit of Allah, from Allah’s essence, and the word of Allah, from Allah’s essence”—just as one says, “This scrap of cloth is from this garment.”

We said, “Jesus came into being through the word; Jesus is not himself the word.” As for Allah’s words, exalted is He:

“a spirit from Him,”

they mean that the spirit came to be in him by His command, just as His words:

“And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth—all from Him,”

mean “by His command”; and its explanation is:
