—we die and live, and we will not be resurrected. * He is only a man who has fabricated a lie against Allah, and we will not believe in him.”
[Al-Mu’minūn: 35–38]

Allah Most High also said:

“They say, ‘There is nothing but our life in this world; we die and live, and nothing destroys us but time.’ Yet they have no knowledge of this; they merely conjecture.”
[Al-Jāthiyah: 24]

There are many similar passages in the Quran. He also relates that they used their own reasoning to impugn the Messenger on grounds they thought necessarily applied to him, as when they said:

“They say, ‘What is the matter with this Messenger, who eats food and walks in the marketplaces? Why has an angel not been sent down to him to be a warner alongside him? * Or why has a treasure not been bestowed upon him, or a garden provided for him to eat from?’ And the wrongdoers say, ‘You are only following a bewitched man.’”
[Al-Furqān: 7–8]

Allah Most High said:

“See how they draw comparisons for you! They have gone astray and cannot find a way.”
[Al-Furqān: 9]

They likewise spoke against the messengers before him, as Pharaoh said:

“Am I not better than this man, who is contemptible and can scarcely express himself clearly? * Why, then, have bracelets of gold not been bestowed upon him, or angels come with him in company?”
[Al-Zukhruf: 52–53]

They said to Shuayb:

“We certainly see you as weak among us. Were it not for your clan, we would have stoned you, and you are not held in esteem by us.”
[Hūd: 91]
