And Allah Most High said:
“When they see you, they only take you in mockery: ‘Is this the one Allah has sent as a messenger?’”
[Al-Furqān: 41]
And Allah Most High said:
“They say, ‘Why has no angel been sent down to him?’ Had We sent down an angel, the matter would have been settled, and they would have been granted no respite. * And had We made him an angel, We would have made him a man, and We would have left them in the same confusion they are in.”
[Al-Anʿām: 9]
And Allah Most High said:
“They did not esteem Allah as He deserves when they said, ‘Allah has revealed nothing to any human being.’”
[Al-Anʿām: 91]
He has also related similar statements from earlier disbelievers, such as the words of Pharaoh’s people:
“Should we believe in two human beings like ourselves, while their people are subject to us? * So they rejected them both, and were among those destroyed.”
[Al-Mu’minūn: 47–48]
And the words of Noah’s people:
“We see you as nothing but a human being like ourselves, and we see that none follow you except the lowliest among us.”
[Hūd: 27]
The various nations said to their messengers:
“You are nothing but human beings like ourselves. You wish to turn us away from what our forefathers worshipped.”
[Ibrāhīm: 10]
Even the messengers said:
“We are indeed only human beings like yourselves, but Allah bestows His favour upon whomever He wills of His servants.”
[Ibrāhīm: 11]
There are other similar passages.
Thus, He has stated that the polytheists denied that a human messenger could be sent, rejecting this on the basis of their own reasoning.
