This account is widely transmitted. It has been related by compilers of authentic hadith collections and collections arranged by Companion, writers on the Prophet’s campaigns and biography, scholars of Quranic exegesis and jurisprudence, and other scholars.
Here, then, was Umar, of whom the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Among the nations before you there were divinely inspired men. If there is anyone like that in my community, it is Umar.”
Al-Bukhārī and Muslim both recorded it in their authentic collections.
He also said:
“Allah has firmly placed the truth upon Umar’s tongue and in his heart.”
And he said:
“Had I not been sent among you, Umar would have been sent among you.”
This was narrated by al-Tirmidhī.
These are among his many virtues. Yet the meaning of a scriptural text was unclear to him, even though its apparent meaning did not contradict what actually happened. For Allah Most High said:
“You will surely enter the Sacred Mosque, if Allah wills, in safety, with your heads shaved or your hair shortened.” [al-Fath: 27].
