separate from Him is all the more impossible. If, however, necessarily entailing something does not constitute dependence upon it, then His necessarily entailing the attributes does not constitute dependence upon them.
Such contradictions abound in the statements of those who oppose the Sunnah, bearing out the words of Allah Most High:
“Had it been from other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction.”
[al-Nisā’: 82]
[The second of al-Rāzī’s arguments in al-Arba‘īn]
Al-Rāzī said:
“The second argument: If He could be pointed to, He would be finite on every side, given what has already been established concerning the finitude of dimensions. Moreover, if He were infinite on every side, He would intermingle with the world and the filth it contains—exalted is He above that. If He were infinite only on some sides, then, if the finite side agrees with the other [in nature, it admits] separation and joining. If it differs from it in nature, every composite consisting of parts of different natures contains simple parts. Each of these could therefore make contact with what lies to its right and left, and vice versa; thus, joining and separation would be possible for it. Anything of which this is possible must owe its composition to one who composes it—exalted is He above that. Furthermore, anything finite on every side could exist with a greater or smaller magnitude than it actually has.
