Darʾ Taʿâroud al-ʿAql wa-n-NaqlIbn Taimiya

, ‘part,’ ‘dependence,’ and ‘other’ are ambiguous terms, then ‘something that occupies space’ may mean something encompassed by other existing things. This is not what they mean. It may also mean something distinct from other things, or something that can be pointed to even if nothing else exists alongside it. This is what they mean by ‘something that occupies space.’ Hence they say: ‘The universe occupies space.’

The term ‘divisibility’ may mean division in its ordinary sense, involving the separation of parts. This is not what they mean. It may also mean that one thing within it can be distinguished from another, or one side from another. This is what they mean.

The term ‘part’ may mean something that was separate and was then joined by something else, or something that can be separated from another thing. This is not what they mean. It may also mean something distinguishable from something else. This is what they mean.

The term ‘dependence’ may mean that something depends upon an agent that brings it into being. This is not what they mean here. It may also mean that something is inseparable from another, so neither exists with the other. This is what they mean. It may also be said that the term means something’s dependence upon something separate from it. This is not what they mean here. Rather, they mean that something is complete only through what is included within it and is called a part, such as an attribute. This is what they mean here.

Once this is understood, the substance of their argument is that, if He could be pointed to, it would follow that He could exist only with His necessary concomitants, without which He cannot exist and which are included in what His name denotes.

It is evident that it is not impossible for such a being to be necessarily existent in virtue of His own essence, which entails these concomitants and possesses these attributes. Indeed, if His reality possesses positive attributes of perfection, it has a stronger claim to existence than if it were described only in negative terms, which would entail that its existence is impossible and that it is likened
