but the devils led them astray, forbade them what I had made lawful for them, and commanded them to associate with Me that for which I had sent down no authority.”
As for the statement:
(Not out of desire or fear)
This has three possible meanings.
The first is that it means: not out of a desire to attain what the lover seeks from the beloved as an end in itself, nor out of fear of losing it. This is impossible, for every servant who desires and loves seeks to attain something and fears missing out on it.
The second is that he neither desires enjoyment through a created thing nor fears being harmed by a created thing. It is possible for someone to worship Allah without this desire and fear. As ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
“What an excellent servant Suhayb is! Even if he did not fear Allah, he would not disobey Him.”
And a report states:
“Had I created neither Paradise nor Hell, would I not still have been worthy of worship?”
It is also established in an authentic hadith that:
“The people of Paradise will be inspired to glorify Allah just as they are inspired to breathe.”
