mentioned in the words of Allah Most High:
“Indeed, those who differ over the Book are in far-reaching discord.”
[al-Baqarah: 176]
As for the disagreement mentioned in the words of Allah Most High:
“Those messengers—We favored some of them over others. Among them were those to whom Allah spoke, and He raised some of them in rank. We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear proofs and supported him with the Holy Spirit. If Allah had willed, those who came after them would not have fought one another after the clear proofs had come to them. But they differed: some of them believed, and some disbelieved. If Allah had willed, they would not have fought one another, but Allah does what He wills.”
[al-Baqarah: 253]
In this disagreement, the believers are praised and the disbelievers are condemned.
As for disagreement over the Book in which all those who differ are condemned, an example is when one group believes in some parts but not others, while another group believes in some parts but not others—as in the disagreement between Jews and Christians, and that among the seventy-two sects.
This is the disagreement mentioned in the words of Allah Most High:
“And they will continue to differ * except those to whom your Lord has shown mercy.”
[Hūd: 118–119]
And in His words:
“And from those who say, ‘We are Christians,’ We took their covenant, but they forgot a portion of what they had been reminded of. So We stirred up enmity and hatred among them.”
[al-Mā’idah: 14]
Thus He stirred up enmity and hatred among them because of their failure to believe in what had been sent down to them.
