misguidance, fantasies, fabricated specious objections, sophistical arguments, and false notions; and that these names do not correspond to what they designate. Rather, they are akin to calling idols gods and lords, and calling Musaylima the Liar and others like him prophets:
“These are nothing but names you and your forefathers have given them, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their souls desire, although guidance has already come to them from their Lord.”
[al-Najm: 23]
The point is that anyone who allows that there may be sound arguments contradicting what he knows through his senses and reason will trust none of his knowledge and will have no means left of affirming any of it.
Likewise, anyone who allows that there may be sound arguments contradicting what Allah and His Messenger have reported will trust none of their reports and will have no means left of affirming any of them.
Thus, those who turn away from the Book and oppose it are sophists whose ultimate destination is sophistry in rational matters and Qarmatian distortion in matters of revelation. They interpret the words of Allah and His Messenger in ways that are self-evidently not what Allah and His Messenger intended by their words. Their rational arguments ultimately lead them to conclusions whose falsity is evident through sensory perception and self-evident rational knowledge.
Then their more discerning thinkers recognize this predicament and fall into doubt, bewilderment, and uncertainty. This is the ultimate destination of everyone who opposes the texts of the Book.
