Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd said:
“Let each of you assess himself by the Quran alone: if he loves the Quran, he loves Allah; if he hates the Quran, he hates Allah.”
The enemies of the prophets are the devils among mankind and the jinn, as in the following account:
“The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Abū Dharr, ‘Seek refuge in Allah from the devils among mankind and the jinn.’
“He asked, ‘Are there devils among mankind?’
“The Prophet replied, ‘Yes, worse than the devils among the jinn. They inspire one another with embellished speech meant to deceive.’”
Embellishment here means adorned speech, just as an object is adorned with gilded ornament. Such speech is deceptive because it deceives the listener. The specious arguments opposing what the messengers brought are embellished speech that deceives the listener.
“So that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter may incline toward it.” Thus, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter incline toward the speech of those who oppose what the messengers brought, as we have seen and experienced.
Then He said:
“Should I seek a judge other than Allah, when it is He who has sent down to you the Book explained in detail?”
[al-An‘ām: 114]
This makes clear that Allah Most High judges between people through the Book He has sent down, explained in detail.
