Darʾ Taʿâroud al-ʿAql wa-n-NaqlIbn Taimiya

Allah Most High also says:

“Indeed, those who dispute concerning Allah’s signs without any authority having come to them have nothing in their hearts but a desire for greatness they will never attain.”
To the end of the verse.
[Ghāfir: 56]

He also says:

“Those who dispute concerning Allah’s signs without any authority having come to them—it is deeply hateful to Allah and to those who believe. Thus does Allah seal the heart of every arrogant tyrant.”
[Ghāfir: 35]

The authority referred to is the Scripture sent down from heaven, as more than one Quran commentator has stated. There is abundant evidence for this, such as the words of Allah Most High:

“Or have We sent down to them an authority that speaks in support of what they associate with Him?”
[Al-Rūm: 35]

And His words:

“They are nothing but names you and your forefathers have given them, for which Allah has sent down no authority.”
[Al-Najm: 23]

in Surahs al-A‘rāf and Yūsuf
