Thus, those who reject proofs drawn from transmitted revelation do not reject them because of any weakness in the proofs or their premises, but because they believe that they contradict reason. Indeed, many of the proofs drawn from transmitted revelation that they reject are far stronger than those they accept. They accept the latter not because transmitted revelation conveys them, but because they believe that reason establishes them. They treat transmitted revelation as support for reason and as an argument against those who dispute with them while accepting transmitted revelation. It is neither their mainstay nor the foundation of their knowledge, as the leading figures among those who oppose Allah’s Book and His Messenger’s Sunnah with their own opinions have explicitly stated.
This being so, it becomes clear that they cannot reject proofs drawn from transmitted revelation whose soundness is known merely because these contradict the reasoning of an individual or a group among them, or contradict what they call reason—unless they invalidate all proofs drawn from transmitted revelation and say: “They establish nothing, and the Messenger’s reporting of something provides no basis for believing that what he reports is true.” In that case, what does not constitute proof cannot serve as a counterargument.
The discussion here is addressed only to someone who knows that the Messenger is truthful, that what he reports is true, and that his informing us of something provides a basis for our believing it to be true. Anyone who knows this cannot give reason precedence over the report of the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Doing so would instead force him to regard the Messenger as sometimes lying or erring in his statements of fact, and at other times being right or wrong in his injunctions. This amounts to declaring the Messenger untruthful, invalidating the evidentiary force of transmitted revelation, barring the way to knowledge of what the prophets and messengers reported, and rejecting the Book and that with which Allah Most High sent His messengers.
