Darʾ Taʿâroud al-ʿAql wa-n-NaqlIbn Taimiya

Allah Most High has also said:

“Indeed, Allah is the Provider, the Possessor of strength, the Firm.”
Al-Dhāriyāt: 58.

And He says:

“And the heaven We built with strength.”
Al-Dhāriyāt: 47.

That is, with power. He also says:

“Did they not see that Allah, who created them, is greater than them in strength?”
Fussilat: 15.

The authentic hadith concerning the prayer for guidance contains the words: “O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power.” What clearer explanation of Allah’s knowledge and power could there be?

As for someone saying here, “He knows by virtue of His essence, or by virtue of knowledge”: if he supposes that the essence, which is knowing and powerful, could exist devoid of knowledge and power—as those who deny the attributes claim—then his statement is misguided and self-contradictory. For affirming one who knows without knowledge, who is powerful without power, alive without life, hearing without hearing, and seeing without sight is self-evidently false, both in reason and in revelation.
