the law of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, just as they claimed that Muhammad ibn Ismāʿīl ibn Jaʿfar had abrogated his law.

Each of these men came to claim prophethood and messengership, or wished to declare such a claim openly were it not for the sword. Such was the case with al-Suhrawardī, who was executed: he used to say, “I shall not die until I am told, ‘Arise and warn.’” Ibn Sabʿīn used to say, “Āmina’s son was certainly hasty when he said, ‘There is no prophet after me.’” It is also said that he would seek out the cave of Hirāʾ so that revelation might descend upon him there.

Ibn ʿArabī claimed something that, in his view, was greater than prophethood: being the seal of sainthood.
