Darʾ Taʿâroud al-ʿAql wa-n-NaqlIbn Taimiya

dependent upon the rest of them. This is not the dependence of what is necessary in itself upon one of its parts.

If it is said that the composite is the whole—that is, the parts and their coming together—this is much the same as saying that the composite is the parts. On this understanding, however, their coming together becomes one of the parts.

Thus, when it is said that it depends upon the parts, what this really means is that it depends upon itself—that is, it cannot be independent of itself. This is precisely what its being necessary in itself means, not something incompatible with its being necessary in itself.

If by it you mean some fourth thing, no fourth thing is intelligible here, so it must first be described. The same reasoning then applies to it.

If he instead says, “But the whole entails its dependence upon each of the parts,” the reply is: The whole’s dependence upon that part is like its dependence upon the remaining parts. That part and all the remaining parts are the whole, so the argument returns to its dependence upon itself.
