provided any proof for denying it; how, then, has he established a proof for denying the position of someone who says, “He is a body unlike other bodies”?
[Continuation of al-Āmidī’s discussion denying corporeality of Allah Most High]
The third argument:
He said: “If He were a body, He would have dimension and extension, which would be either infinite or finite.
If it were infinite, it would be infinite either in every direction or in some directions but not others.
The first possibility is impossible for two reasons:
First: we shall demonstrate the impossibility of an infinite dimension.
Second: it would follow that no other body could exist, or that bodies would interpenetrate and He would mingle with filth; this is impossible.
The second possibility is also impossible for two reasons:
First: we shall demonstrate the impossibility of an infinite dimension.
Second: one extremity’s being finite, unlike the other, would be due either to its own nature or to an external determining factor. The former is impossible, since there is no reason to privilege one over the other. The latter would entail that the Lord depends on a necessitating and determining factor for His magnitude to be imparted to Him. Dimension means nothing other than the parts themselves, in accordance with
