This is why these deniers ultimately make existence, which is one in kind, numerically one: they identify the Creator’s existence with the very existence of created beings, Zayd’s existence with that of ‘Amr, Paradise’s existence with that of Hell, and the existence of water with that of fire.
The source of all their error is that they take what individual entities have in common—the genus in the linguistic sense—and find it to be one in the mind, then suppose that this is numerical unity. They fail to distinguish between unity in genus and numerical unity, or to recognize that the common, universal genus has no existence outside the mind but exists only in distinct individual entities.
For this reason, some of our contemporaries have likened speech, as a single genus encompassing multiple kinds, to a single kind. On his account, no speech at all would remain outside the mind. Had he grasped the matter correctly, he would have known that this speech is not that speech, just as this movement is not that movement, even if the different kinds of speech have speech in common, just as the different kinds of movement have movement in common. Indeed, in some respects, the differences between the meanings of speech are greater than those between the kinds of movement. This matter is discussed at length elsewhere.
The point here is to say:
