or disobeys. Moreover, he will fall into the feared consequence sooner if he obeys the person who commands him to deny what he knows with certainty the Messenger has reported than if he disobeys him. On this assumption, what is forbidden is believing him, and what is commanded is declaring him false. In that case, prohibiting it is impermissible, whether it is something to be avoided or not. If it is not something to be avoided, it cannot permissibly be prohibited; and if it is, it is unavoidable in either case, so prohibiting it serves no purpose. Indeed, if not believing him is the feared consequence, demanding it directly is more reprehensible than demanding something else in order to avert it. For commanding unlawful sexual intercourse is more reprehensible than commanding seclusion that leads to unlawful sexual intercourse.
Such is the case of someone who commands people not to believe the Messenger concerning what they know he has reported, after they have come to know that he is Allah’s Messenger, lest believing him lead them to disbelieve him.
Indeed, if a person is told, “Do not believe him concerning this,” he is being commanded to do something that contradicts the grounds on which he knows the Messenger to be truthful. He is thus being commanded to do something that entails trusting none of his reports, for once he allows the possibility that the Messenger might lie or err in one report, he allows that possibility in others.
This is why those who follow this path ultimately derive no knowledge from the Messenger concerning the reported matters relating to Allah Most High’s attributes and actions—and, for some of them, even the Last Day. They believe that some of these reports are to be rejected through denial or reinterpretation, while others are not. Yet they have no rule derived from the revealed message to which they can refer in this matter.
Rather, one says:
“Affirm whatever your reason establishes; otherwise, do not affirm it.”
And another says:
“Affirm whatever your unveiling establishes; otherwise, do not affirm it.”
