another name, as when a sword is called sārim (keen-edged), muhannad (made of Indian steel), abyad (bright), or battār (cleaving). Other examples include the names of the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the names of the Quran. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“I have five names: I am Muhammad, I am Ahmad, I am al-Māhī (the Effacer), through whom Allah effaces disbelief; I am al-Hāshir (the Gatherer), after whom people will be gathered; and I am al-Āqib (the Last).”
He also said: “I am the smiling warrior; I am the Prophet of Mercy; I am the Prophet of Battle.” His names also include al-Muzzammil (the Wrapped One), al-Muddaththir (the Cloaked One), the Messenger, and the Prophet.
Among the names of the Quran are the Criterion, the Revelation, the Book, Guidance, Light, Healing, Clarification, and others.
Since souls’ need to know their Lord is the greatest of all needs, their ways of knowing Him are greater than their ways of knowing anything else, and their mention of His names is greater than their mention of the names of anything else. He, glorified is He, has names in every language, and He has many names in Arabic.
