Once this is clear, whisperings and doubts that undermine self-evident knowledge cannot be dispelled through demonstration. Rather, whenever a person reflects and reasons, they arise in his heart more frequently. Whisperings may overwhelm him until he is unable to ward them off, just as he is unable to resolve a sophistical objection.
This is dispelled by seeking refuge in Allah. For Allah is the One who grants His servant refuge and protects him from misleading doubts and enticing desires. This is why the servant is commanded to seek his Lord’s guidance in every prayer, saying:
“Guide us to the straight path—the path of those You have blessed, not those who have incurred Your wrath, nor those who have gone astray.”
Al-Fātihah 6–7.
In an authentic divine hadith, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, relates from his Lord, Blessed and Exalted:
“O My servants, all of you are astray except those whom I have guided. So seek guidance from Me, and I will guide you.”
Allah Most High also says:
“When you recite the Quran, seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.”
Al-Nahl 97.
