One of those who followed their method, such as al-Rāzī and others like him, was asked:
“Why, when these whisperings arise, did the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—not prescribe rational demonstration showing the invalidity of infinite regress and circularity, but instead prescribe seeking refuge in Allah?”
He replied that this resembles someone confronted by a dog barking at him to hurt him and block his path. Sometimes he strikes it with a stick; at other times, he asks its owner to restrain it. He said: “Rational demonstration is the first approach, and it is difficult. Seeking refuge in Allah is the second, and it is easier.”
Someone objected to this answer, saying that it implies that rational demonstration is the stronger and more complete method, whereas this is not the case. Rather, seeking refuge in Allah is the more complete and stronger method, for Allah’s removal of whisperings from the heart is more complete than a person’s removing them himself.
The response is:
The question is invalid, and both answers to it rest on an invalid premise and are therefore invalid. This argument rests on the assumptions that these questions arising within the soul can be dispelled in two ways—rational demonstration and seeking refuge in Allah; that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—prescribed seeking refuge in Allah; that demonstrating the invalidity of circularity and infinite regress puts an end to these whisperings through rational demonstration; that rational demonstration puts an end to the questions arising within the soul without what the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—mentioned; and that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—did not prescribe rational demonstration.
[The Prophetic Method Is Based on Faith and Rational Demonstration]
This is mistaken in several respects. Rather, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—prescribed rational demonstration where it should be prescribed, and pointed to the comprehensive proofs to which the furthest reach of
