[Signs of Satan’s Allies]

If a person handles filth and abominations that Satan relishes; or frequents public bathhouses and latrines where devils gather; or eats snakes, scorpions, wasps, and dogs’ ears—loathsome, verminous things; or drinks urine and other impurities beloved to Satan; or calls upon anyone other than Allah, seeking rescue from created beings, turning toward them, or even prostrating in the direction of his shaykh, without dedicating the religion sincerely to the Lord of all worlds; or keeps company with dogs or with fires, or lodges in rubbish heaps and foul places; or makes his abode in graveyards—especially the graves of unbelievers among Jews, Christians, or polytheists; or dislikes hearing the Quran, shies away from it, and prefers listening to songs and poetry, favoring the pipes of Satan over the speech of the All-Merciful—these are the hallmarks of Satan’s allies, not the marks of the allies of the All-Merciful.

Ibn Masʿūd, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “Let none of you question himself with anything but the Quran: if he loves the Quran, he loves Allah; but if he dislikes the Quran, he hates Allah and His Messenger.”

ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “Had our hearts been pure, they would never grow weary of the words of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.”
