their rulers and their commoners, and that no creature can reach Allah—Majestic and Exalted—except by following him, both inwardly and outwardly. Indeed, were Moses, Jesus, or any other prophet to encounter him, they would all be duty-bound to follow him, just as Allah, the Exalted, has said:
“And when Allah took the covenant of the prophets: ‘Whatever I give you of Scripture and wisdom, then there comes to you a messenger confirming what is with you—you must believe in him and support him.’ He said, ‘Do you acknowledge and accept My solemn pledge on that?’ They replied, ‘We acknowledge it.’ He said, ‘Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses. Whoever then turns away after that—such people are the defiantly disobedient.’” (Q 3:81-82)
[The covenant Allah laid upon the prophets to believe in Muhammad ﷺ]
Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “Allah never sent a prophet without first taking from him the covenant that, should Muhammad be sent while that prophet is still alive, he must believe in him and support him; and He commanded each prophet to take the same covenant from his nation: that, if Muhammad were sent while they were alive, they too would certainly believe in him and support him.”
Allah, Exalted is He, also says:
“Have you not seen those who claim to believe in what has been revealed to you and to what was revealed before you, yet they seek judgment from the tāghūt (false authority) though they were commanded to reject it? Satan only desires to lead them far astray. When it is said to them, ‘Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,’ you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion. How then, when calamity strikes them because of what their own hands have sent forth, do they come to you swearing by Allah, ‘We intended nothing but goodness and reconciliation’? Those are the ones whose hearts Allah knows well; so turn away from them, admonish them, and speak to them a penetrating word. We have sent no messenger except that he should be obeyed by Allah’s leave.” (Q 4:60-64)
