No Spiritual Authority for Whoever Contradicts the Book and the Sunnah
For that reason ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, used to consult the Companions, debate with them, refer matters back to them, and they in turn would dispute with him over certain issues. He would present his proof from the Book and the Sunnah, and they would present theirs, and he acknowledged their right to challenge him. Never once did he say to them, “I am a muḥaddath, divinely inspired and addressed; you must therefore accept everything I say and refrain from opposing me.”

The awliyāʾ, however, are not to be obeyed in every command they issue, nor believed in everything they relate; rather, their actions and statements are to be weighed against the Book and the Sunnah. Whatever accords with the Book and the Sunnah must be accepted, and whatever contradicts the Book and the Sunnah must be rejected, even if its proponent is from
