It is likewise related: “If there were to be a prophet after me, it would be ʿUmar.”
ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say, “We never considered it unlikely that the sakīnah (divine tranquility) spoke through ʿUmar’s tongue.” This has been reliably transmitted from him through the narration of al-Shaʿbī.
ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar said, “Whenever ʿUmar expressed an opinion on a matter, saying, ‘I think it is such-and-such,’ events would turn out exactly as he had said.”
Qays ibn Ṭāriq reported, “We would talk among ourselves that an angel spoke upon ʿUmar’s tongue.”
ʿUmar himself would say, “Draw near to the mouths of the obedient and listen to what they say, for truthful realities are unveiled to them.”
The truthful realities that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) said are disclosed to the obedient are those matters that Allah, exalted is He, reveals to them. It is firmly established that Allah’s friends—awliyāʾ (saints)—receive divine addresses and unveilings, and the greatest of them in this community after Abū Bakr is ʿUmar.
