[None of the disbelievers or hypocrites can be a wali]
Section
A servant can only be a wali (friend and ally) of Allah if he is a believing, God-fearing person, for Allah says:
“Surely, the friends of Allah shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve—those who believe and are mindful of Him.”
In the well-known ḥadīth recorded by al-Bukhārī, already cited above, Allah—blessed and exalted—is reported to have said:
“My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory acts until I love him.”
A person does not become a true believer, pious and devout, until he first draws near to Allah through the prescribed obligations; by that he joins the ranks of the righteous, the People of the Right. Thereafter he keeps approaching his Lord through voluntary deeds until he becomes one of the foremost, those brought near. It is therefore obvious that no disbeliever or hypocrite can ever be a wali of Allah. The same applies to anyone whose faith and acts of worship are not actually valid—even if he incurs no sin for that—such as the children of the idolaters and those to whom the message has not yet reached. Even though it is said that such people will not be punished until a messenger has been sent to them, they are still not counted among the friends of Allah unless they come to embrace faith and observe piety. In short, whoever does not seek nearness to Allah either by performing good deeds or by refraining from sins is not one of His friends.
