Al-Furqān bayna Awliyāʾ al-Raḥmān wa-Awliyāʾ al-ShayṭānIbn Taimiya

from My own Name. Whoever upholds it, I will uphold him, and whoever severs it, I will cut him off.”

He also said:

“Whoever maintains it, Allah will maintain him; and whoever cuts it off, Allah will cut him off.” Reports of this meaning are many.

The friends of Allah are of two kinds: those who are brought near, and the people of the right, as noted earlier. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—described the deeds of both groups in the ḥadīth of the saints, saying that Allah, Exalted is He, declares:

“Whoever shows enmity to a friend of Mine, I have declared war against him. My servant draws near to Me by nothing more beloved to Me than the duties I have made obligatory upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me through voluntary acts until I love him. When I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks.”
