and they were the jinn of Nasibin, as is confirmed in the sound report transmitted from Ibn Masʿūd. It is related that the Prophet recited Surah al-Raḥmān to them, and whenever he came to the verse, “Which of your Lord’s favors will you both then deny?” they responded, “Our Lord, none of Your favors do we deny; to You belongs all praise.”
When they gathered around the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—they asked him for provisions for themselves and for their mounts. He said, “Every bone over which Allah’s name has been pronounced will come to you in the richest state of flesh, and every droppings-pellet will be fodder for your animals.” He further said, “So do not use either of them for personal cleansing (istinjāʾ), for they constitute the sustenance of your brothers from among the jinn.”
This prohibition is authentically established from the Prophet through multiple avenues, and on its basis the scholars ruled that it is unlawful to perform istinjāʾ with such items. They argued: if cleansing is forbidden with what has been allotted to the jinn and their beasts, then it is all the more forbidden with what has been set aside for human beings and their livestock.
