humankind and jinn alike. Consequently, there is not a single human being or jinn for whom faith in Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and adherence to his guidance are not obligatory. Each of them must accept as true everything he has reported and obey everything he has commanded.
Whoever has received conclusive proof of his prophethood yet still does not believe in him is a disbeliever—whether he be human or jinn.
Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—was sent to the two orders of creation (al-thaqalayn) by the consensus of the Muslims. A company of jinn actually listened to the Quran while the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—was praying with his Companions in the valley of Nakhlah on his way back from Ta’if; they then returned to their people as warners. Allah informed him of this in the Quran:
“[Remember] when We directed a group of jinn toward you to listen to the Quran. When they were present, they said, ‘Listen quietly.’ When it was finished, they went back to their people as warners. They said, ‘Our people, we have heard a Scripture revealed after Moses, confirming what came before it; it guides to the truth and to a straight path. Our people, respond to Allah’s caller and believe in him; He will forgive you some of your sins and protect you from a painful punishment. But whoever does not respond to Allah’s caller will never escape Him on earth, nor will he have protectors besides Him; such people are in manifest error.’” (Q 46:29-32)
The Conversion of a Group of Jinn
After that, Allah Most High revealed:
“Say: It has been revealed to me that a group of jinn listened and said, ‘We have indeed heard a wondrous Quran which guides to sound judgment, so we have believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord. Exalted is the majesty of our Lord; He has taken neither spouse nor child. A foolish one among us used to say outrageous things about Allah, and we had thought that humans and jinn would never speak a lie against Allah. Yet there were men from humankind who sought refuge with men of the jinn, and they only increased them in oppression.’” (Q 72:1-6)
