Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ was a man whose prayers were invariably answered; never did he supplicate without being granted what he asked. It was he who crushed the armies of Chosroes and opened Iraq.
When ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb dispatched an army, he placed a commander named Sāriyah at its head. While ʿUmar was delivering the sermon, he suddenly called out from the pulpit: “Sāriyah! The mountain—Sāriyah, the mountain, the mountain!” When the army’s courier later returned, ʿUmar questioned him. He said, “Commander of the Believers, we met our enemy and they routed us. Then we heard a voice crying, ‘Sāriyah, the mountain—Sāriyah, the mountain!’ So we put our backs to the mountain, and Allah vanquished them.”
When Zunayrah was tortured for the sake of Allah because of her acceptance of Islam, she steadfastly refused to recant and lost her sight. The idolaters scoffed, “Al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā have taken her eyesight.” She replied, “Never, by Allah!”—and Allah restored her vision.
Saʿīd ibn Zayd invoked Allah against Arwā bint al-Ḥakam when she falsely accused him, saying, “O Allah, if she is lying, then blind her sight.”
