and whenever they commit a wrongdoing, they ask Allah’s pardon and turn back to Him in repentance.
[The Chief Formula for Seeking Forgiveness]
In Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī it is related from Shaddād ibn Aws that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“The supreme invocation for seeking forgiveness (sayyid al-istighfār) is for a servant to say:
‘O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I uphold Your covenant and promise as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge my sin; so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.’
Whoever recites this in the morning with full certainty and then dies before evening shall enter Paradise.”
[Hadith: “O My servants, I have forbidden oppression to Myself …”]
In the sound report transmitted by Abū Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, relates from his Lord, Blessed and Exalted:
“O My servants! I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden among you; so do not wrong one another.
O My servants! You sin by night and by day, yet I forgive all sins and it does not concern Me; so seek My forgiveness and I shall forgive you.
O My servants! All of you are hungry except those whom I feed, so ask Me for food and I will feed you.
O My servants! All of you are unclothed except those whom I clothe, so ask Me for clothing and I will clothe you.
O My servants! All of you are astray except those whom I guide, so ask Me for guidance and I will guide you.
O My servants! You will never attain the ability to harm Me so as to harm Me, nor will you attain the ability to benefit Me so as to benefit Me.
O”
