How the devils overtake them so that they imagine them to be angels
The Exalted has said:
“Whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful, We appoint for him a devil who becomes his intimate companion. They certainly bar them from the path, while they suppose they are rightly guided. Then, when such a person comes before Us, he will say, ‘Would that there were between me and you the distance of the two Easts! What an evil companion!’ It will be said, ‘Today, since you did wrong, your sharing in the punishment will not benefit you at all.’”
“Allah will never forgive that anything be associated with Him, though He forgives whatever is less than that for whomever He wills. Whoever associates others with Allah has indeed wandered far astray … He promises them and fills them with hopes, but what Satan promises them is nothing but delusion.”
“And Satan will say, when the matter has been decided, ‘Indeed Allah promised you the promise of truth, while I too promised you but failed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you and you responded to me. So do not blame me; blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I repudiate your former act of associating me with Allah. Surely the wrongdoers will have a painful punishment.’”
“Remember when Satan made their deeds seem fair to them and said, ‘No human being today can overcome you, for I am surely at your side.’ But when the two forces came within sight of each other, he turned on his heels and said, ‘I am quit of you. I see what you do not see; I fear Allah, and Allah is severe in punishment.’”
