for the bliss and delight of the Hereafter can be secured only through God-fearing obedience.
Likewise, peace of mind and body, freedom from anxious worry, obsessive greed, exhausting toil, hardship, drudgery, and misery in the pursuit of worldly gain are attained only by moderation in seeking one’s provision.
Thus, whoever fears Allah wins the pleasure and bliss of the Hereafter, and whoever is moderate in his worldly pursuits is spared the wretchedness and anxieties of this life. Allah alone is the One whose help is sought.
The world has cried out about herself—
if only among creation there were one who would listen!
How many a man who trusted in long life have I destroyed,
how many a hoarder have I scattered what he amassed. (1)
Benefit
The Prophet ﷺ coupled “sin” (al-maʾtham) with “debt” (al-maghram) (2); for sin brings loss in the Hereafter, whereas debt brings loss in this world.
Benefit
Allah the Exalted said, “And those who strive for Our sake—We shall surely guide them to Our paths” (29:69).
He, glorified be He, made guidance contingent upon striving; therefore, the people most perfectly guided are those who strive the hardest. The foremost striving is the struggle against the carnal soul, against capricious desire, against Satan, and against the allure of the world. Whoever wages this fourfold jihad for Allah’s sake, Allah will guide him to the paths of His good pleasure that lead to His Paradise; and whoever abandons the struggle will be deprived of guidance in proportion to what he abandons of it.
Junayd said: “Those who strive against their passions for Our sake through sincere repentance—We shall surely guide them to Our paths.”
