• The world is like a wanton woman who never stays with one husband; she seeks out husbands only so that they may be admired on her account—so do not accept being her cuckold.

I weighed her beauty against her deeds,
And found that all her charm cannot make up for her disgrace.

(1) The two verses are ascribed to Ibn al-Mu‘tazz in Fawat al-Wafayat, vol. 3, p. 6; and to Ibn al-Sarraj (or another poet) in Mu‘jam al-Udaba, vol. 6, p. 2535; Wafayat al-A‘yan, vol. 4, p. 340; Inbah al-Ruwat, vol. 3, pp. 146–147; and Al-Wafi bil-Wafayat, vol. 3, pp. 86–87. (2) The expression designates a land teeming with wild beasts. (3) The verse is quoted without attribution in Tareeq al-Hijratayn, p. 119, and Rawdat al-Muhibbin, p. 632. (4) The line is by Abd Allah ibn Mu‘awiya and is recorded in Al-Kamil by al-Mubarrad, vol. 1, p. 277; Al-Aghani, vol. 12, p. 214; and other sources.
