• O you who have swerved from their highway! Take your place at the tail end of the caravan, and if you grow drowsy on the road then sleep, for the commander watches over the stragglers.
• It was said to al-Hasan, “The people have outpaced us on jet-black chargers while we ride hobbled donkeys.” He replied, “If you are still on their path, how swiftly you will catch them!”
Benefit
• Whoever is bereft of his intimacy with God among people yet finds it in solitude is truthful but weak. Whoever tastes it among people but loses it when alone is spiritually ill. Whoever lacks it both among people and in solitude is dead, cast away. And whoever enjoys it both in solitude and among people is the true lover—sound and strong in his state.
If a person’s initial opening came in seclusion, further increase will come only from seclusion. If his opening came among people—by advising and guiding them—his increase will be with them. And if his opening was to stand with God’s will wherever He places him and in whatever He employs him, his increase will be both in solitude and among people.
The noblest state is to choose no state for yourself other than what He chooses for you and establishes you in; therefore be with His will for you, not with your will from Him.
• The lamps of hearts that are pure by innate nature already shine before the arrival of the sacred laws: “Its oil would almost glow even if no fire touched it” (Quran 24:35).
• Quss (1) affirmed pure monotheism without ever seeing the Messenger, whereas Ibn Ubayy (2) disbelieved despite praying with him.
