—rather, it must be a resolve untainted by the slightest wavering or second-guessing. Once his resolve is genuine, what remains is truthfulness in action: to expend every ounce of capacity, devote every effort to it, and let nothing of his outward limbs or inner heart lag behind. Sound intent protects him from a feeble will and low ambition, while truthful action safeguards him from laziness and indolence.
Whoever is truthful with Allah in all his affairs, Allah will treat him better than He treats anyone else.
Such truthfulness is a compound of sound sincerity and genuine reliance upon Allah; the most truthful of people, therefore, is the one whose sincerity and reliance are both intact.
A Sublime Benefit Concerning Divine Decree
A Lord possessed of will commands a servant who also possesses will.
If He grants the servant success, He Himself wills to assist him and to inspire him to carry out what He has commanded.
But if He abandons him, He leaves him to his own will and his own soul; and from that vantage the servant will choose nothing but what his lower self and natural disposition desire. In sheer human terms he wants nothing else, and for that reason Allah censures him in His Book from that perspective. He only praises the servant for something that rises above mere humanity—such as being Muslim, believing, patient, beneficent, grateful, God-fearing, dutiful, and the like. These are qualities that go beyond simple human existence and the mere soundness of one’s will. Yet the mere soundness of that will is insufficient unless it is reinforced by another measure: divine enablement (tawfīq), just as the mere soundness of the eye is not enough for sight unless another factor is present—light that is external to it.
