darknesses shine; as the Prophet ﷺ said in the supplication at Ṭāʾif, “I seek refuge in the light of Your Face by which every darkness is illumined and through which the affairs of this world and the Hereafter are set aright.” (1)

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd (2) said, “With your Lord there is neither night nor day; the light of the heavens and the earth is from the light of His Face. Thus He—glorified is He—is the Light of the heavens and the earth, and on the Day of Resurrection, when He comes to judge His creation, the earth will shine with His light.”

Among His Most Beautiful Names is al-Jamīl (the Beautiful). In the authentic report from him ﷺ: “Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty.” (3)

His beauty—exalted is He—appears in four degrees: the beauty of the Essence, the beauty of the attributes, the beauty of the actions, and the beauty of the names. All His names are supremely fair; all His attributes are attributes of perfection; all His actions are wise, beneficial, just, and merciful.

As for the beauty of the Essence and what it truly is—none perceives it but He Himself and none knows it beyond Him. To created beings He grants only glimpses, whereby He acquaints those servants He has honored. That beauty is protected from every other, veiled by the covering of cloak and mantle, as His Messenger ﷺ relates from Him: “al-Kibriyāʾ (majestic greatness) is My cloak and al-ʿAẓamah (grandeur) is My mantle.” (4) Because majestic greatness is the more expansive and encompassing, it is more fitting to be called the cloak. He, exalted is He, is the Ever-Great, the Most High.
