• Let none of you hitch his religion to a single man; for if that man believes, he believes, and if he falls into unbelief, he follows him into unbelief. Yet if you must take someone as a model, then model yourselves on the dead, for the living are never safe from trial (1).
• None of you should be a mere yes-man! They asked, “What is a yes-man?” He replied, “He who says, ‘I am with the people; if they are rightly guided, I am guided, and if they go astray, I go astray.’ Instead, each of you must resolve that even if all the people were to disbelieve, he would still not disbelieve” (2).
• A man once said to him, “Teach me words that are concise yet beneficial.” He answered, “Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him; move with the Quran wherever it moves; accept the truth from whoever brings it to you, even if he is distant and disliked; and reject falsehood from whoever brings it to you, even if he is beloved and near” (3).
• A servant will be brought on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to him, “Render the trust you were given!” He will say, “My Lord, how can I, now that the worldly life has vanished?” Thereupon the trust will be made to appear in the very form it had on the day he first took it—at the bottom of Hell. He will descend, pick it up, place it on his shoulders, and start to climb out. Just when he thinks he has reached safety, it will drop, and he will drop after it, remaining there for all eternity (4).
• Seek out your heart in three situations: when you listen to the Quran, in gatherings of remembrance, and in moments of solitude. If you do not find it in these situations, then ask Allah to grant you a heart, for you have no heart at all.
