Al-FawāʾidIbn al-Qayyim

He said: “So whomever Allah wills to guide, He opens his breast to Islam; and whomever He wills to let go astray, He makes his breast tight and constricted.” ⦗al-Anʿām: 125⦘

He also said: “Is the one whose breast Allah has opened to Islam so that he walks in a light from his Lord…?” ⦗al-Zumar: 22⦘

Likewise, He links guidance with turning back to Him and misguidance with hardness of heart:

Allah said: “Allah chooses for Himself whom He wills, and He guides to Himself whoever turns to Him.” (13) ⦗al-Shūrā: 13⦘

And He said: “So woe to those whose hearts have hardened against the remembrance of Allah; they are indeed in manifest error.” (22) ⦗al-Zumar: 22⦘

Guidance, mercy, and all that accompanies them—bounty, favor, benefaction—fall under the attribute of giving, whereas misguidance, punishment, and everything that accompanies them belong to the attribute of withholding. He, exalted is He, moves His creation between His giving and His withholding, and all of that issues from consummate wisdom, absolute sovereignty, and perfect praiseworthiness. There is no deity but Allah.

When you see vain souls, empty of will and aspiration for this matter, clutched by this lower world and clutching it in return, then leave them to it; it befits them, for their constitution is corrupt. Do not carve this reality upon them, for it will quickly fall away. What remains is their attachment to the world even after it has slipped from their grasp; that attachment itself becomes a torment for them in proportion to its strength. Their craving and desire linger within them while the objects of their desire are barred from them, so that they despair of ever attaining the pleasure they long for.
